The topic of this module originated in the Bust Open The Silos media reform proposal, but it’s designed to be fun and is suitable for first-year college students. It features a role play and an embedded, trained AI “Adviser” to personalize the experience. It not only addresses partisan media polarization, but also gives students insights into the phenomenon of polarized beliefs and rhetoric.
The approach is not simply inclusion of an ChatGPT Assistant; rather, a system of back-end prompts informs the model about each segment of the interaction design, and puts “guardrails” around both the Adviser and the student. The approach enables personalization for each student to a level not previously achievable except with exorbitant cost.
The approach is applicable to almost any subject matter, but the demo makes vivid its potential for media literacy, media policy, social media, and civil discourse. We intend to create “sets” of modules like these to help address the crisis in public discourse.
